Il saggio ripercorre i mutamenti che ridisegnarono radicalmente volto e gerarchie interne della nobiltà siciliana nei secoli dell'età moderna. Matrimonio e compravendita risultano essere gli agenti più rilevanti del ricambio nel XVI secolo, mentre nel Seicento la vendita di titoli e di giurisdizioni ridefinì la mappatura della nobiltà siciliana a tutti i livelli della gerarchia, in un contesto in cui il mercato dell'onore contribuiva non poco al mutamento in atto nella società siciliana, garantendo promozione sociale e redistribuzione delle ricchezze dal basso.
